Between Stops

Scratches of rain on the subway window.
You look at the ugly women, feeling weird
and wondering what it is that once made,
or will make, them beautiful,
and what, if anything, once made,
and will make, you well.

Chapped Lips

It's March and it's windy. I'm in NH, getting ready - I'm going back to VT. Snow is bright and everything's rosy through my new sunglasses. My lower lip's badly chapped; the corners of my mouth are chapped.
How many thoughts in your day are of me? How many at night? It must be windy in your city too.
Soon I'll feel your chapped lips, your teeth against mine.

How we gonna soften your hard hard hard hard heart? How we gonna make it so you don't get taken apart?

And at night when the train came into my room, I thought of you. Lights on the wall & a voice in the hall, I lay awake, full of hate.
And you wouldn't leave me, and you wouldn't stay.
I know somebody too - I know somebody who will save me from crazy.

Optimism
03:58
|
|||
One of these days I'm going to tell you about the life I lived before I met you: too much sun and staying inside, going out at night just to hide.
Empty bottles and retail therapy; video games and up at noon. Long stories with no plot and less action; "la la la la la doo doo doo."
There was a time when I felt sick, when people passing made me shiver. Turning away was all I could do; there was nothing, then there was you.
There is a time when a moment will rise and I can say to you with love in your eyes: this is all behind me now - everything is here in this room.
